error:0308010C:digital envelope routines::unsupported (ERR_OSSL_EVP_UNSUPPORTED)

Last checked 2026-10-17 · 2 fixes · reviewed answer

TL;DRThis error occurs when software tries to use an old or unsupported encryption method that newer versions of OpenSSL (used by Node.js and similar tools) no longer allow by default.

Likely causes

  1. Running an older build tool, bundler or library (such as webpack 4 or create-react-app) with Node.js 17 or newermost likely
  2. Custom code or scripts that explicitly request legacy encryption algorithmspossible

How to fix it

Safest first: SafeChanges settingsDangerous
  1. Try running the command with the legacy OpenSSL provider enabledChanges settings

    Set an environment variable before starting your app or build. This tells Node.js to allow the older methods temporarily.

    NODE_OPTIONS=--openssl-legacy-provider npm start
  2. Update your project dependenciesChanges settings

    Run the package manager update command to get newer versions of libraries that support current OpenSSL.

    npm update

    ⚠ Back up your project folder first.

If that didn't fix it

The error will keep appearing on every build or start until the root cause in the code or dependencies is addressed.

When to see a technician

Consult a developer if you cannot modify the project scripts or if this occurs in a production environment.
